![]() But looking at those records as a whole, rather than at the wild-out-of-tune-guitar-solo level, it’s easy to find uniform, focused themes throughout. To a certain extent, it is all of those things, and that’s part of what makes the sound of their first few records so compelling. ![]() I think there’s a misconception, or at least a general feeling, that early Modest Mouse is messy, free-form, and imprecise. ![]() It’s hard to argue, though, that Good News didn’t mark a conscious shift in what Isaac Brock and the band were trying to accomplish, a shift that leaves a lot of touchstones from earlier in their career behind. That’s not to say I don’t enjoy the band’s post 2001 output I love Good News for many reasons, I like We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank for slightly fewer reasons, and I tolerate everything that came after for some reason. The thought keeps coming back to me that if you isolated everything Modest Mouse released pre- Good News for People Who Love Bad News, you might have a band with a perfect discography.
